About the Academy...
The Richens/Timm Academy is one of the most recognizable and respected names in the world of Irish dance. It is the most established and accomplished school in both central Ohio and central Indiana. The Academy’s rich history began over 35 years ago when Ann Richens ADCRG, a native of Dublin, Ireland, began traveling to Columbus from Dayton, Ohio to share her passion for Irish dance. After her prized pupil, John Timm, captured the 1993 Senior Men’s World Championship title, they partnered and the school became the Richens/Timm Academy. In 1994, John continued the tradition of the traveling dance master while expanding the Academy’s reach into Indiana. Under their direction, the Richens/Timm Academy currently serves locations in Columbus (Dublin) and Dayton, OH , Indianapolis and Tipton, IN, and now a satellite studion in Wyoming.
FUN, FAMILY, FRIENDS
Richens/Timm provides a fun, friendly, family atmosphere where each dancer is given the polished skill set to maximize his/her potential and accomplish personal goals—whether that be to perform at a grandparent’s nursing home, to capture a World Medal, or to learn simply for the love of dance.
Known for its outstanding success in the competitive arena, the Academy has produced more than 10 World Qualifiers each year over the past decade. Historically, individuals have accomplished:
- 49 Regional Champions
- 11 North American Champions
- 3 All-Ireland Champions with 2 Runner-up finishes
- 2 Senior Men's World Champions
On the biggest stage of all, the annual World Championships, dancers from the Academy had the best finish from any Mid-American school in 2009, capturing 4 medals! Over time Richens/Timm dancers have won a staggering 36 medals, including 30 top 10 finishes; 13 top 5 finishes; 8 top 3 finishes; and now, 2 elusive World Championship titlles with Michael Holland's April 2012 win as Senior Men's World Champion.
Whether a Beginner, Novice, Champion or adult dancer, The Richens/Timm Academy of Irish Dance provides access to the highest qualified instructors and their closest attention. Even with varying aspirations, all dancers receive a high quality education in Irish dance at the Richens/Timm Academy.

There has been Irish dance instruction in Indianapolis, Indiana since the 1970s taught by various traveling teachers. In 1994, shortly after retiring from competitive Irish Dance as the 1993 Senior Mens World Champion, John Timm committed to traveling weekly to Indianapolis to teach. John’s dedication to the Indianapolis group is witnessed by his nurturing of the school over the past decade from 25 dancers to its current enrollment of over 200 dancers. With the additional commitment of his wife, Heather, they were able to expand the offerings at the Indianapolis location to include a second evening of classes each week to help strengthen the competitive dancers, additional classes on Wednesday evenings for senior students who wish to focus on competitive and show group dancing, as well as adult social Irish dancing classes. The teaching staff also includes former Academy students and champions themselves, Liz Donahue and Meghan Barmann.
